Maintaining Natural Stone

Rinse

  • Remove all traces of the cleaner by rinsing thoroughly with water. Make sure to rinse both the tile and the grout.

Grout

  • Use a soft bristled brush to clean inside the grout joints. Rinse away the debris that has been loosened. Be careful of not scrubbing too hard.

Beware of Acidic Cleaners

  • Acidic cleaners can destroy the polished surface of alkaline stone, such as travertine and marble. They also will destroy the grout, eroding it to the point that you'll have to replace it. If you have colored grout, it will damage the color.

Intense Cleaning

  • If you need something more than just a gentle cleanser and a soft brush, you can find heavy-duty cleaners at home improvement stores or through manufacturers. Large areas of tile can be buffed with a commercial floor buffer or a heavy-duty cleaning machine.
